Testosterone therapy can speed up pattern hair loss in men whose follicles are already genetically sensitive to it. It does not cause hair loss in men who are not. The mechanism is DHT, a more potent hormone the body makes from testosterone, acting on follicles that were built to respond to it. So the honest answer depends on your family history and what your hair has been doing already, which is why a clinician asks about both before any plan is written.
What actually drives pattern hair loss
Male pattern hair loss is inherited. The follicles on the crown and hairline in susceptible men respond to DHT by shrinking over successive cycles until the hair is fine, then gone. Testosterone is the raw material for DHT. More testosterone can mean more DHT, and in a sensitive follicle that can bring forward what was coming anyway.
Why the answer differs from man to man
The variable is the follicle, not the hormone. Men with no family history and a full head of hair at 45 generally do not start losing it because of therapy. Men who were already thinning may notice the pace pick up. The same dose does two different things in two different scalps.
What to talk through before starting
- Family history on both sides, and what your own hairline has done over the last ten years.
- What matters more to you, because for some men the trade is easy and for others it is not.
- Whether therapy is indicated at all, which the panel answers before hair is even the topic.
- What monitoring looks like, since this is an ongoing decision rather than a one time one.
Why the labs come first
Hair is a real consideration, but it is the second question. The first is whether your total and free testosterone, SHBG, estradiol and the rest of the panel support treatment. If they do not, the hair question never comes up. If they do, it is part of an open, two way conversation with someone who has seen your numbers and your history.
How Regener8 approaches it
The panel comes first, drawn at LabCorp, and a board certified clinician reviews it with you on a 30 minute video visit. Concerns like hair are talked through plainly before anything is prescribed, and if therapy is right for you it is monitored, with retesting every six months.
