Insulin sensitivity is how well your body responds to insulin, the hormone that moves sugar out of the blood. When cells stop responding, insulin stays high, and high insulin tells the body to store fat rather than burn it, with the belly as the first storage site. That fat then makes the resistance worse. It is a loop, and it shows up on a panel through A1c, glucose, triglycerides and HDL well before anyone is called diabetic.
Why the waist first
The fat that gathers deep around the organs, visceral fat, is the most hormonally active fat in the body. It is both a cause and a result of insulin resistance. Chronically high insulin drives storage there, and the fat stored there releases signals that make cells respond to insulin even less. That is why belly fat in men is so hard to shift with effort alone.
The markers that show it
- Hemoglobin A1c gives your average blood sugar over about three months.
- Fasting glucose shows where you sit on the morning of the draw.
- Triglycerides and HDL move early. High triglycerides with low HDL is one of the most reliable signs of insulin resistance, often before sugar rises at all.
- Testosterone belongs on the list too. Low testosterone in men tracks closely with visceral fat, and research now describes it as a feature of that fat rather than a separate problem.
Why a normal A1c is not the end of the story
Blood sugar is the last thing to move. Insulin can run high for years while A1c stays in range, because the extra insulin is doing its job, just at a cost. The triglyceride and HDL pattern, the waist, and the testosterone reading tell the story earlier. A clinician reads all of them, not one.
What changes it
Insulin sensitivity improves with muscle, movement after meals, less refined carbohydrate, and sleep. When hormones are part of the picture, correcting them helps the rest work. None of that is a guess when the panel is in front of you.
How Regener8 approaches it
The panel comes first, drawn at any LabCorp, and a board certified clinician goes through it with you on a 30 minute video visit. If a plan is right for you it is built from those numbers, shipped to your door, and retested every six months so it keeps matching where you are.
