When a man eats well below what he burns, the body treats muscle as spare fuel. Protein synthesis slows, and without a reason to keep muscle, it goes first while fat is defended. The research is consistent: adequate protein plus resistance training is what keeps lean mass on during a cut, and the men who lose the most muscle are the ones who diet hardest without lifting.
What a calorie deficit does to muscle
A deficit is a signal of scarcity. The body responds by slowing the process that builds and repairs muscle, a state researchers call anabolic resistance. At the same time it holds on to fat, because fat is the long term reserve. The result is a scale that moves and a body that looks softer, not leaner.
What protects it
- Protein at every meal. Studies of men in a deficit show muscle protein synthesis stays close to normal on a high protein diet and drops on a low one.
- Resistance training. Loading muscle tells the body it is still needed. Combined with protein, it preserved lean mass even in athletes on aggressive cuts.
- A moderate deficit. The bigger the gap, the more muscle goes. Slower is not just easier to keep up, it changes what is lost.
Why it matters more after 35
Men lose muscle with age anyway, and testosterone, the hormone that helps hold it, drifts down through the thirties and forties. A hard cut on top of that compounds the loss. Less muscle means a lower resting burn, which makes the next round of weight loss harder and the regain faster.
What the panel shows
Bloodwork does not measure muscle, but it shows the conditions around it. Testosterone and free testosterone tell you whether you have the hormonal support to keep muscle. Hemoglobin A1c and glucose show how your body is handling fuel. ALT gives a read on the liver, which changes with diet. Read together, they tell a clinician whether your plan is costing you the wrong tissue.
How Regener8 approaches it
The panel comes first, drawn at any LabCorp, and a board certified clinician goes through it with you on a 30 minute video visit. If a plan is right for you it is built from those numbers, shipped to your door, and retested every six months so it keeps matching where you are.
